Sony PSP to Download Movies

Media giant will compete with Apple’s iTunes movie downloads, but offer them for PSP users.
December 18, 2006

By Michael Cohn

Sony is reportedly planning to develop a movie download service for its PSP handheld gaming console that would compete in some ways with Apple Computer’s iTunes service.

However, like iTunes, Sony’s service would be device-specific. While Apple aims its music and video download service at the iPod, Sony’s service would be oriented toward the PSP (PlayStation Portable).

www.gp2x.co.uk NEWS LETTER

Hello Everyone, Craig here, from www.gp2x.co.uk, with a festive GP2X update.

So yes, we have made a 266mhz GP2X available on our website for those of you who want maximum power, but this is not all, there is so much news to get though... if you have been even slightly out of the loop you must read on...

Well, we finally got Payback2X finished with a demo being available here:

http://www.gp2x.co.uk/payback

And you can buy the full game for £22.99 from our website, it comes on a huge 512MB SD card and is seriously awesome - try the demo to see for yourself. We have 3 copies to give away later in the newsletter (just to keep you reading).

Last date for shipping is the 21st.

In other news things have really come together in the last few months for our little GP2X, first PicoDrive, the excellent Megadrive emulator, is now using both of the GP2X CPUs to great effect - giving around a 40% increase in speed meaning it now runs so fast you can underclock the GP2X when running it!

http://www.gp32x.com/board/index.php?showtopic=32632

The author, Notaz, has now turned his attention to GP2X SNES emulation:

http://archive.gp2x.de/cgi-bin/cfiles.cgi?0,0,0,0,5,1860

Also, as you may have read on some news sites, the GP2X has officially outsold the GP32 in just over 10 months (the GP32 was on sale for 4 years). That means there are over 30,000 of us GP2X owners now. Woohoo!

Next up MAME is at version 3.7 and is without doubt the best and most polished version of MAME on any portable. Franxis has optimised the hell out of what was very very unoptimised code on the PC original to make a wonderful mobile video arcade for you, imagine that when you were cramming 10p's into a seven foot
tall Final Fight cabinet at the beach.

http://www.talfi.net/gp32_franxis/

The Amiga is back (again!) with an all new GP2X amiga emu which already runs several games at full speed with sound, UAE2X is the name and GnoStic is the guy behind it, he has said he plans not only for it to get faster, but the ultimate goal is for it
to run as many Amiga MegaDemos as possible!

http://www.gp32x.com/board/index.php?showtopic=32534

An unexpected port of Descent 2 by Paines showed up recently, running suprisingly well for a first release, you will need your original PC version but it is certainly worth tracking it down to play this classic on the GP2X: ....

http://www.gp32x.com/board/index.php?showtopic=32661&st=0

Lynx emulation has been pretty much perfected by tuskenraider2k with a new version of his emulator which fixes some previous bugs and gives a 10% speed increase.

http://archive.gp2x.de/cgi-bin/cfiles.cgi?0,0,0,0,5,1175

DJWillis's Scummvm port is now an official port and part of the SVN and Scumm website, ScummVM of course interprets classic graphical adventure games like Monkey Island and Beneath a Steel Sky:

http://www.gp32x.com/board/index.php?showtopic=32496

Oh and I've been busy this month too - I got a little tired of never being able to find an MP3 player for my car which did everything I wanted - so I'm working on one for the GP2X. It of course also works great as an MP3 player in general and I was
just slightly inspired by a certain WinAmp on the PC. It is even compatable with WinAmp playlists.

There are some betas available online, but i'll be making the first major release this week, keep an eye on http://www.gp32x.com.

Oh and for news on the up and coming CPS2 emu checkout gp32x.com, there is also a new emu for a certain popular handheld around too...

Oh yes, I almost forgot (information just seems to fall out of my brain these days) it's competition time! We have 3 copies of the new GP2X commercial game Payback to give away, just answer us this question one:

What is the earliest example of British TV sci-fi still in existance?

Put you answer on the back of a BBC news reader's crucifix and force it into the forehead of GP2X HQ at orders@cdworld.co.uk

- be quick - closing date is the 21st of December!

Take care and have fun over Christmas,

Craig

White Paper From Exploit Prevention Labs Examines New Realities of Web 2.0 Security

The Paper Demonstrates How Conventional Approaches are Inadequate Against New Breed of Web Security Threats

ATLANTA, Dec. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Exploit Prevention Labs (http://www.explabs.com/), a leading developer of safe surfing software that protects against phishing, social engineering, and other web-based exploits, today published a new paper exploring the new security risks accompanying the rise of Web 2.0. The white paper, entitled, "Securing Web 2.0: Why Security 1.0 is no Longer Enough," is available for download at http://www.explabs.com/about/resCenter/wp.asp.

"We've looked at how the popularity of Web 2.0 sites like MySpace and YouTube creates unintended security risks for users," said Roger Thompson, CTO and co-founder of Exploit Prevention Labs. "Unlike previous generations of Web applications, today's Web 2.0 applications are characterized by heavy reliance on user-generated content and cross-linking across multiple sites using IFRAMEs, RSS, and cross-site scripting. When users visit a trusted Web 2.0 site, their browser is pulling information, data and malware from many other sources, some of which may not be so trustworthy."

Amongst the topic covered are the nefarious techniques used by international cybercrime organizations to raid bank and brokerage accounts or steal usernames, passwords, account numbers and other personally identifiable information. Other techniques discussed include drive-by downloads that take advantage of known security vulnerabilities in common applications; ransomware that extorts payment from users at virtual gunpoint; social engineering and phishing scams; botnet recruitment, and identity theft.

By dissecting Web 2.0 security risks, the paper demonstrates that traditional security solutions such as anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewalls, and patch management -- while critical -- are woefully inadequate when it comes to protecting against today's threats. The paper calls instead for a fresh approach to Web 2.0 security that recognizes and leverages the collaborative nature of Web 2.0.

By harnessing the collective virtual eyes and ears of Web 2.0 users, next generation security solutions, such as those offered by Exploit Prevention Labs, will provide real-time threat monitoring and protection against dynamic Web 2.0 threats.

Lockheed Martin Instrument on Latest NASA Sun Mission Sees First Light

PALO ALTO, Calif., Dec. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUVI) instrument -- designed and built at the Solar and Astrophysics Laboratory of the Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) Advanced Technology Center (ATC) in Palo Alto -- has begun returning images of the Sun's corona as part of NASA's Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO). STEREO utilizes two nearly identical spacecraft on different trajectories to study the most energetic events on the surface and in the lower atmosphere of the Sun, and their travel through interplanetary space.

Data from spacecraft instruments will allow scientists to construct the first ever three-dimensional views of the Sun, providing a new perspective on Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs). CMEs are violent explosions on the surface of the Sun that can propel up to 10 billion tons of the Sun's atmosphere -- at a million miles an hour -- out through the corona and into space.

The two STEREO spacecraft were launched together on a Delta-II on Oct. 25, 2006 from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla. Both spacecraft flew by the Moon taking advantage of a gravity assist that has propelled one of the observatories into an orbit "ahead" of the Earth in its journey around the Sun, and the other "behind" our planet as it makes its yearly revolution. The first images are from the "ahead" spacecraft.

EUVI is one element of an instrument suite on each STEREO spacecraft called SECCHI -- the Sun-Earth Connection Coronal and Heliospheric Investigation -- under the direction of Principal Investigator Dr. Russell Howard of the Naval Research Laboratory of Washington, D.C. SECCHI comprises a suite of telescopes, including three white light coronagraphs and EUVI.

"These first images are magnificent, and just a taste of wonderful things to come! There is enormous satisfaction in seeing that our years of effort have borne fruit. We've been studying CMEs for a long time, but SECCHI will offer us new insight into the structure and evolution of the solar corona in three dimensions, while EUVI focuses specifically on the initiation and early evolution of CMEs," said Dr. James Lemen, Lockheed Martin co-investigator on SECCHI. "EUVI and the other instruments on SECCHI will follow the propagation of these events through the corona, out into interplanetary space and all the way to Earth, giving us a comprehensive view of these enormous phenomena."

NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. manages the STEREO mission. The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Md. designed and built the spacecraft. The laboratory will maintain command and control of the observatories throughout the mission, while NASA tracks and receives the data, determines the orbit of the satellites, and coordinates the science results.

The Solar and Astrophysics Laboratory at the ATC has a long heritage of spaceborne solar instruments including the Soft X-ray Telescope on the Japanese Yohkoh satellite, the Michelson Doppler Imager on the ESA/NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, the solar telescope on NASA's Transition Region and Coronal Explorer and the Solar X-ray Imager on the GOES-N environmental satellite. The laboratory also conducts basic research into understanding and predicting space weather and the behavior of our Sun including its impacts on Earth and climate.

The ATC is the research and development organization of Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company (LMSSC). LMSSC, a major operating unit of Lockheed Martin Corporation, designs, develops, tests, manufactures and operates a variety of advanced-technology systems for national security, civil and commercial customers. Chief products include human space flight systems; a full range of remote sensing, navigation, meteorological and communications satellites and instruments; space observatories and interplanetary spacecraft; launch vehicles, fleet ballistic missiles; and missile defense systems.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin employs about 140,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The corporation reported 2005 sales of $37.2 billion.
